Scott Mathieson’s worst nightmare came true as the fireball pitcher got
the news that he will probably need a second Tommy John Surgery if he
ever wants to pitch again. Mathieson will visit Dr. James Andrews for
an arthroscopic procedure Thursday in Birmingham, Alabama though
there’s a good chance Mathieson will need another ulnar collateral
ligament reconstruction.

About 10 percent of pitchers who don’t recover from Tommy John surgery
and Scott fell into that category. Only about 30% of second time
surgeries work but Eric Gagne and Doug Brocail are examples of guys
that were able to recover after a second surgery.

Good friend Cole Hamels said Mathieson is a fighter and will not give
up without a fight. He will need the surgery if he ever wants to pitch
again. We wish him the best of luck.
