With two outs in the ninth, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San
Fransisco Giants in dramatic style for the second time in 3 days. With
two out in the ninth, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell walked and Geoff
Jenkins hit a ball that got past second base. Ryan Howard chugged
around home and scored on an error for the win.
Cole Hamels pitched ok today although the long ball haunted him as he
gave up 4 runs. Hamels did end up striking out 5 and walked none but he
gave up 7 hits in only 6 innings of work.
The
Phillies offense took advantage by scoring 5 unearned runs. The bats
are still not where they should as Charlie Manual said in his post game
press conference but it is only a matter of time before this team
scores runs by the bunch.
The
Phillies will remain in first place. The Florida Marlins kept pace
beating the Padres and the Phillies will now cheer on Dan Haren as he
tries to beat Johan Santana and the New York Mets.
The Phillies continue to play inspired baseball battling back and
playing hard. The key for the Phillies is to go into Arizona and win 2
out of 3. This will be a tall order against one of baseballs best games
teams but this Phillies team has stepped up all year. The other good
news is that Jimmy Rollins should return to the team for the third game
on Thursday. I would really love to see the team in first place when
Jimmy returns.
All Star Voting has begun
All Star voting has begun and two of the names I had thought I would be endorsing are out of contention,
Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard. With the competition at short stop, it
will be very hard with his injury for J-Roll to get the nod from the
voters. Howard’s dismal start obviously will keep him from election.
Four Philadelphia Phillies are very deservent of making the team. They
are Chase Utley, Brad Lidge, Pat Burrell, and Cole Hamels. It is safe
to say that Utley will win by a landslide. It will be interesting to
see how Burrell does with the fans. Being so streaky and having never
made the team before, it may be hard for him to get votes. Hamels and
Lidge will go at the managers discretion. Clint Hurdle picks all of the
pitchers which in my opinion is ridiculous but that is how it has
always been.
Be sure to vote early and often. Ballots are available at Citizens Bank Park and you can also vote by clicking on the “Vote Here” link of this page. Happy voting!
